Shayne's final trial took place in April 1982 to face charges of attempted murder and using a firearm to hold hostages while trying to flee the Palais de Justice courthouse. Ironically, the hearing was in the same Room 4.05 from which he'd tried to escape. On April 21, 1982, after several days of testimony from Justice Paul Martineau who said the accused had tried to fire at him, plus testimony from other witnesses, Shayne was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. Following several appeals, his final one was rejected by the Supreme Court of Canada on June 18, 1984.
